Perry is the daughter of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first television roles included two episodes in the role of Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mom. The actress did not go on to explore acting as a profession until she reached adulthood, as her parents were afraid of the negative effects that stress could cause. Perry admitted that she wasn't confident in her acting during high school. She began performing as a means to connect with new people during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry moved to New York, where she landed small roles in series such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Homesickness then caused Perry back to California, where theater jobs were available. Perry starred with her mother on stage in The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. In 2015, she starred with Kevin McKidd alongside her mother in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie. Odyssey Theatre Ensemble Odyssey Theatre Ensemble is located in West Los Angeles. Perry played a part in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. In 2017, Perry played a supporting role in the ABC political drama Scandal in which her father was the main character. That same year the actress was selected to play the younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again as a teen model of the mother's role. Despite having a family connection to the character she received the part through an audition.
